To me, both sides now isn't so much a coming of age song. If it were, it would mean that the author's point of view evolved from one earlier naive state to a more enlightened state through experience. In other words, it would mean that the protagonist used to see clouds & love as beautiful, and after subsequent experiences saw them in a different & more realistic light. While the coming of age/changing perspective thing is the subject of the verses; the chorus goes beyond that by adding that although she has seen things for what they really are, she continues to choose illusion over reality.

I think both sides now is a song about illusion versus reality from the point of view of a dreamer. Even when experience teaches the true nature of something, the dreamer can continue to live with their illusions about life and love. The dreamer seems doomed to repeat the same mistakes by choosing to sugar coat the true nature of life and love with their own romantic illusionment. Even this has a duality: you can look at it as being hopeful or unrealistic.

Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837) was the world's first 'white-face' clown. He took the character of 'Clown' from a style of play called a Harlequinade, originally a country bumpkin fool character Grimaldi gave him the painted face and brightly coloured colthes we know as clowns today. Grimaldi was, quite simply, a comedy genius.

Joseph's father, Jo Grimaldi, was a strict teacher who used to savagely beat Joseph as a child when he made mistakes in the routines. As a result Joseph grew up a manic depressive, giving rise to the legend of the brilliant entertainer who was a depressive in his private life. A pattern that has repeated itself over the centuries. The love of Grimaldi's life died giving birth. He never recovered from this.

St Jude is the patron saint of hopeless cases.

The song is a lament, a hopeless case of being in love with someone you can never have and hiding your sadness behind a wall of laughter.

東京到上海的飛機旁坐著個喋喋不休的卡加利人，讀完航太工程以後，就去賣油。億啊萬啊的數字亂飛。說出來的句子都是這樣的：我必須告解我是個天生的行銷人，沒有什麼是我賣不出去的。我想回他：也沒有什麼能讓我驚喜的。就算是廣播中聲線發抖的飛機駕駛員也一樣。

時差。24小時裡就睡了這麼三個小時。網路上牆內甚麼也看不到，只有享受被剝奪被制約的快樂。外面灰朦朦的景色，不知道髒的是窗還是城市。在東京機場等了六個小時，他說：沒有期待也是期待。當時聽不懂什麼意思，下了飛機就懂了。

三年沒見的亞洲。肉灰色的機場、霓虹燈、亂七八糟的高樓大廈、大量交通工具吐出來的熱空氣、面無表情的計程車司機。仍然，熟悉到瞬間有種萬念俱灰的感受。

仍然到處都看到台灣。龍井草堂像陽明山，河畔的另一邊就是樹林。但台灣沒有蘇小小，斷橋，白緹，胡雪巖故居。怎麼也沒想到蘇小小的墓是個誰都能摸上一手的大黃球就是。

一樣的舊氣，一樣的凌亂，當然中國什麼都大了一些 － 四處有絕望或充滿希望的眼睛在看著你。做各種小事情的服務員們若不是充滿感恩地緩緩做著自己的事情，就是敞著領子什麼也不在乎地甩開兩腿，一天一天繼續活著。各種各樣的情侶橫眉豎眼地牽著手走在路上，走在西湖邊上，幾千年都是這樣走的。

火車上終於喚起一些童年記憶。窗外飛去的農田高樹幾乎有法國鄉間的味道。最後都是軟體的問題。像晚上西湖印像沒辦法擺脫前面後面的聲道評論一樣。杭州男人酥聲軟語，出租車司機細聲細氣地對橫過馬路的一群青少年嘟囔：年紀輕輕地怎麼就色盲呢哼。

友人介紹到西湖邊上的景點餐廳去吃飯，樓什麼樓地伴著喜宴，160年歷史掛著一種擺脫不了的陳年油腥。晚上的龍井草堂一碟碟地吃，各式各樣各種手段做出的粘乎乎菜餚們像昂貴的外星人血液。最愛的竟是最後端出來的粗粉包子。像當年在北京和師兄弟們一起吃的。

西湖上設計了一場聲光秀。舞台就在湖里，氣勢磅礴驚人。叫“西湖印象”，說的是白蛇傳。最喜歡的一幕是黑衣眾人在水上大追穿著紅色嫁衣的白娘子，像種種道德硬是排山倒海而來，橫豎要吞沒了她。中國的故事都是道德故事，突破道德或警世－ 別突破道德。眾人的道德，眾人的邏輯。一人對眾人。一人身處眾人的道德。西方那種私人情操是沒有的，康德就更別提了。

平凡只是平凡。就算偉大也得是“偉大卻甘於平凡”。要在平凡中見偉大幾乎是不可能，不然我們今天看的便是浮生六記不是白蛇傳了。

而我還沒學會如何告訴自己：這裡是中國，什麼都可以。

我們的夜市人生：從爆橘拳談表達障礙

為什麼我們會這樣﹖快樂的時候維持著撲克臉﹐受傷的時候擺出微笑。害怕失去對方時﹐變本加厲擺出猙獰的模樣﹐想念對方時﹐口中卻說「現在我在忙」。是社會文化讓我們變態、家庭教育讓我們有樣學樣﹔還是因為害怕受傷﹐於是像拳擊手一樣訓練自己作出相反的反射動作﹖

為什麼母親咳嗽時﹐爸爸對她大吼「拰爸是沒錢給你買藥吃嗎」 ﹔為什麼考試一百分﹐母親的鼓勵方式是「這麼久才考了一次真可恥」﹐我們要長到多大才會發現前者表達的是關懷﹐後者表達的是鼓勵。為什麼他們不能直接說「去吃藥好嗎我的小親親﹐你咳得我心都痛了」﹐或是「你絕對有這個實力﹐我以你為榮」﹐為什麼他們的表達方式是這樣子﹐為什麼我們的表達方式是這樣子﹖

在近日熱門的爆橘拳影片中﹐我們再次見識到文化教導我們口不對心的程度。為什麼這個男子把話說的這樣絕﹐又在對方心灰意冷走出門以後﹐哭天嗆地地痛喊她的名字﹐一副沒有她我該怎麼活下去的樣子﹖早知如此﹐為何他不能即時面對自己情緒﹐理清自己想法﹐達到最終目的 - 讓她知道他很在意﹐表達自己的真情﹖為什麼我們有這麼多內心戲﹐怎麼也無法把話說清﹖

高中時上過一堂情緒管理課程。課程開始時﹐個人先在紙上描寫一次吵架過程﹐然後仔細分析這些對話背後真正要表達的意義﹐思考對方的感受是什麼﹐他要表達的又是什麼﹖然後進而回應這些感受﹐而不是回應對方字面上的訊息。課程最後﹐我們重新在紙上虛擬對話。重組出來的句子是這樣的﹕我知道你現在感覺______﹔但是你這麼說﹐我感覺_______﹔我理解你想告訴我的是_______。

他們真正想說的是什麼﹖

男﹕如果不是看在大風的面子上﹐像你現在跟我說這麼殘忍﹐如此無情的話﹐我金居福會更殘忍對待你。恰恰，我們十幾年的感情﹐能不能不要對我這麼殘忍，你甘知安餒我感覺熊熊親像要死？

女﹕你放心。只要我們雙方的律師﹐談好離婚的條件﹐我一定會離開。 你把話說得這樣絕是要怎樣﹐再怎麼說我也為你生了一個兒子﹐你就不能好好說話不要流汗流成這樣﹖

那麼﹐上過課後的金居福和恰恰又會怎麼說話﹖

男﹕我知道你現在感覺很不好﹔但是你這麼說﹐我感覺親像一個橘子被你捏爆﹔我理解你想告訴我的是你已對我失望﹐我希望你可以念在多年感情上﹐再給我們一點時間﹐好嗎﹖親愛的恰恰﹖

或是﹐恰恰也可以這樣接招﹕

這樣的連續劇還有人要看嗎﹖這樣的連續劇還夠鄉土嗎﹖鄉土一定得譁眾取寵嗎﹖或許問題是我們根本不知道我們到底在想什麼﹐或是說出這些話會得到什麼結果﹐我們就是要說罷了。我們不在乎對方聽到什麼﹐也不在乎會有什麼後果﹔我們已經含著別人的舌頭太多年﹐那也就是自己的舌頭了。

16 歲拿新詩首獎﹐讓文化協會送到俄國去﹐英國文學的高才生﹐喜歡王爾德、惹內、薩德、波特萊爾 - 都是些天才型的妖物。高考結束以後﹐他搬到夢寐以求的倫敦﹐住在奶奶的房子裡﹐在墓園找了一個工作。挖墳、除草﹐空閑時靠著墓碑在自己的本子上塗塗寫寫。他在英國文學系讀了一年﹐遇見姐姐的同校同學 Carl Barât﹐世界停了一停。

是友情﹐是愛情﹐是不需定義的相遇。是競爭﹐是互補﹐又像看著鏡子和自身戀愛﹐也就是這樣。就是碰見了。

2.0 時代的微型審判

看完奧斯卡以後，為了延續電影工業＋ 媒體效應＋ 娛樂政治的三種精神，接著看2008年的紀錄片“Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” 。感想如下：

1，這世界上有人被強姦，還有一種人迫不及待把衣服脫光了。

2，當法國認清了天主教和聖母，上帝趕緊創造了美國。

3，世人發洩自己的道德觀，以補償自己無法犯罪的貧瘠；與其面對自己的無知，還不如拿出指頭比較快。


如果有什麼比他的電影還精彩/黑暗的話，就是他自己的人生了。波蘭籍的Polanski 出生在法國，父母都死在集中營裡。在波蘭成為一個出名導演以後，他前往倫敦，拍了更多電影，認識了第二任妻子。嚮往60年代嬉皮風潮的兩人搬到好萊塢，"Rosemary's Baby" 使他一舉成名。就在人生看上去一帆風順時，臨盆的妻子在家里和幾個友人被謀殺。報紙甚至懷疑他就是兇手。一直到殺人魔曼森家族的成員在牢裡向同獄犯人炫耀自己的行徑，這件事才真相大白。

那是1969年的事，這件悲劇算是徹底結束了嬉皮歡愉的六零年代。八年後，他被控提供一位13歲的未成年少女酒精和藥物、隨後發生關係，他再次成為鎂光燈焦點。在美國媒體上，他是操著異國口音的變態戀童癖，在歐陸媒體上，他是被美國媒體陷害的悲劇人物。在經歷一年左右的調查、審判、牢獄後，在宣判前，他自己開車，到機場買了單程飛機票，飛往法國，一去不回。

他在歐洲重新建立了自己的生活。描寫波蘭鋼琴師二戰經歷的“戰地琴人"The Pianist拿了奧斯卡最佳導演獎：他不在當場拿獎，當然。他再婚，和法國女星 Emmanuelle Seigner 有兩個孩子，是電影和影像藝術六席法蘭西終身院士中其中一席。去年九月，在前往蘇黎世電影節領取終身成就獎的時候，被瑞士警方依美國發的國際逮捕令在幾場被逮捕。交出巨額保釋金以後，現正在瑞士家裡上電子腳銬被拘；現在案子進展是，美國高等法院法官 Peter Espinoza 拒絕了他在異地受審的要求，要求他回到美國。

當新聞簡單的報導“Roman Polanski 因77年強姦13歲女童的案子入獄”的時候，許多人突然有了正義感。人們不在乎細節、不在乎這個案子從來沒有宣判、不在乎當事人和母親恨不能成名的心態、不在乎法官是個媒體狂、不在乎當事人已經原諒（如果一個人可以原諒不成立的罪行的話）。他該坐牢不該坐牢都不是問題，只是“還有人在乎事實嗎“？

奧運果然是希臘的產物

Plushenko 還是輸了。對他來說﹐連銀牌都算是一種失敗。他微笑著﹐和九年前的模樣不一樣了。那時他青春大好﹐站在世界的頂端 - 沒有什麼打不了的仗﹐大不了的事。可以向芭蕾舞者 Vaslav Nijinsky 致敬﹐橫掃裁判席的 6.0 滿分。也可以對 Tom Jones 的 Sex Bomb 褪盡衣衫﹐令全場瘋狂﹐拍手歡呼十數分鐘不能停止。

Evgeni Plushenko 和我同年﹐出生在俄國最東部的邊疆地區。從四歲開始溜冰﹐一直到11歲那年訓練的場地關閉﹐才搬到聖彼得堡訓練。14歲成為少年滑冰賽的世界冠軍﹐從此金牌無數﹐是世界上第一個做出 4-3-2﹐4-3-3﹐4-3-3-3 轉的人。2006年拿到奧運金牌以後﹐決定退休養傷 - 直到俄國在歐洲滑冰賽拿了1960年來最壞的成績。四年沒有溜冰的他從去年三月重新開始訓練﹐年底隨即拿了俄國和歐洲杯的冠軍﹐代表俄國參加奧運。

花式溜冰至於俄國﹐就如同橄欖球於美國﹐曲棍球於加拿大一樣的地位。他不但是選手﹐也是公眾人物﹐在俄國MTV、壹週刊和春晚都會出現的那種。他愛國﹐愛女人﹐出自一個父母為了支持他得不停地撿空瓶才夠吃飯的那種家庭﹐一個人到聖彼得堡訓練﹐沒有什麼童年﹐母親很俄國地對他說﹕想得到最好的東西﹐唯一的方法便是放棄其他的一切。

我當然是著迷了 - 我最無法抗拒這種難以定義的人物。無出其右的才能來自寂寞冗長的青年時代﹐之後便像沒好的病一樣﹐過份熱情天真便容易蒼老。毫不掩飾自己的喜惡和才能﹐於是被人當作驕傲放肆。

禮拜二晚上看完男子的 short program﹐趕緊回去看這幾年的賽事和歷史。男子溜冰的世界就像希臘眾神同聚﹐愛恨交織﹐壁壘分明﹐誰都是自己世界的主人﹐那幾分鐘的獨裁者。每個人的個性和美感﹐從溜冰的方式就能看得出來。像懂字的人看書﹐聽音樂的人知音一樣清楚。

四個小時的比賽﹐他是最後出來的。一揮手﹐氣勢還在﹐放肆的底蘊也沒變﹐但音樂響起﹐唯有他能做得不費吹灰之力的四轉﹐曾經那樣尖銳優雅、獨一無二﹐現在帶著一種奮力拼搏的味道﹐每次落地都讓人倒抽一口冷氣。腳步慢了﹐手勢少了﹐腰肢還能搖動﹐是胖過又瘦回來的﹐結束時照例送一飛吻給全場、給裁判﹔眼神十分肯定﹐只是帶著血絲。

他結了婚﹐離了婚﹐又結了婚﹐新婚妻子一頭金髮﹐不甚細緻卻絕對“耐”﹐也是典型的俄國人。為他忿忿不平於是指著他的銀牌說﹕這可是白金做的。金光閃閃的粗俗和高雅共處一向是俄國的獨特之處。

巨大的戲劇性 - 童年的夢想﹐多少年的訓練和努力﹐整個國家的希望﹐一切的一切﹐濃縮到短短的幾分鐘﹐幾秒﹐名次間往往差距極微 - 看的不是輸贏﹐是悲劇或是英雄故事﹐或兩者都是 - 奧運果然是希臘的產物。
